We all desire beautiful skin, sans the blemishes, but we hardly put in the extra effort (guilty as charged). In our day-to-day life filled with chaos and to-do-lists, who has the time to visit the salon and pamper your skin, right? Most of us don't even take out 20 minutes from our routine to cleanse our skin, let alone intensive skin care. But what we don't realise is that most skin-types need a regular face clean up for that healthy, radiant look. Note: It's time to take care of your skin by acing the basics. After all, your face is what gives you away when you are excited, happy or stressed. We bring you a step-by-step guide to get flawless skin at home in no time, plus expert tips to enhance your natural beauty, and keep blemishes at bay.
Face Clean-Up at Home: A Step-By-Step Guide
1. Cleansing
Wash your face thoroughly with a facial cleanser or face wash, and pat the skin dry with a soft towel. "Avoid hot water as it dries out the skin", recommends Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. Next, dab some cleansing milk on a cotton pad and wipe your face with it in order to unclog your pores and remove any leftover dirt.
2. Steaming
Optional: Steam for as long as your skin can sustain (approximately 5 minutes) and then gently wipe the face with a facial tissue. This step works wonders for oily skin. Massage your face using an ice cube (in circular motions), thereafter, to tighten the pores and bring back the skin temperature to normal.
3. Scrubbing
Proceed by applying a face scrub for a few minutes since it helps eliminate dead skin cells, which make your skin look dull. You can also skip the store-bought variety, and instead apply a mix of sugar and honey in equal parts to exfoliate your skin naturally. Scrub your face for 5 minutes, and then leave it on for another 3 minutes or so, before you wash it off.
4. Face Pack
No matter what your skin type is, the application of a moisturising face pack makes your skin soft and also improves your skin tone. Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist at Max Hospitals, adds, "If you have combination to oily skin, apply a face pack that contains multani mitti (fuller's earth)" since it soaks up excess oil. India's leading beauty expert, Suparna Trikha says, "Bananas, tomato and papaya are also known to have a cleansing and tightening effect on the skin". If you have normal to dry skin and wish to go au naturel, mix sandalwood powder with rosewater and apply the paste on your face till it dries up.
5. Toning
Apply a home-made toner on your face, such as cucumber juice and rose water, which helps maintain the pH balance.
6. Moisturisation
Finally, apply a nourishing cream on your face and neck. "Don't forget to moisturise your face before going to bed. For dry skin, use milder cleansers that are free from alcohol. And for acne prone skin, use a lotion that contains benzoyl peroxide", suggests Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals.
